After 5 long years in development, Remedy’s Xbox 360 Exclusive, Alan Wake, finally reaches store shelves.
I was able to get hold of my copy today. Not often the UK gets a major release before the US, so i was very happy.
Even though i have been excited for this game for a long time, i was abit wary because it has been getting some mixed reviews. The majority of them really good but some have made me think twice.Anyway, i got the game, played through the first couple of hours. Not gonna
give my full impressions of it yet. Will save it for this weeks podcast. I will mention a few things though. So……..First. The graphics are really nice, for the most part anyway. The environments are quite stunning. Lighting is great. Character models look ok, but you can tell they are a few years old now.
The game is structured episodically and checkpoints every couple of minutes. Also every new episode begins with a recap of what happened on the previous one. A feature i thought would be good for you Brook, considering you don’t always get time to play games in long stretches.
The games atmosphere can be very unnerving. Already there has been some instances where i gave abit of a jump and was hesitant about proceeding along the path. Quick tip. Play this game in the dark and with your surround sound on (if you have it)
I did actually get caught off guard and have a “oh shit” moment at the end of the first episode. I have read in reviews about songs that play at the end of the episodes and i was very suprised to actually hear one of my favourite songs by Roy Orbison playing. It was actually very appropriate for what just happened.
I think the concept of using light as your only safe haven from the enemies is a really good one, and i hope they can switch the combat etc up throughout to avoid it getting tedious and repetitive.
Lastly, something i was very suprised about. I was originally going to get the Limited Edition version of the game, but i don’t actually get paid til next week so i loaned the money from a friend but he only had enough for the standard edition, so i got that. When i opened up the box, a little card fell out advertising Alan Wake DLC with a code on the back of it. I redeemed it and found that it’s to get the first of the episodic DLC free when it drops at the end of July. I was quite chuffed with that coz it didn’t say anything on the back of the box about it being included and i hadn’t heard anywhere about it being included in the standard edition either.
So ye, just a couple of thoughts. I’m happy with the game up to now.

I cant wait and got the limited edition preordered and Red Dead Redemption.
Also Im loving Split Second but there is no way I am getting 3 games in one week, even for a month its quite a bitWar.

Ye i’m gonna try and play as much as i can tonight. It’s just a bitch that it’s one of those games that you should play alone, when it’s dark, with the lights off and the sound up lol.

Oh wow!!! This game is fantastic. Just finished the 3rd episode. Played it from start to finish. Took me over 3 hours lol, it was hella long.
Brook the environments do switch up from just being in the woods and even though there are daylight sections, up until now the majority of the game does take place at night. Which is of course when the combat happens.

Just reached episode 5. I don’t think there is long left now. The story is starting to come together.
Loving it.
I hope people are not going to play this game and expect to be scared to death by it in the traditional sense. It’s not about cheap scares that make the player jump out of there seat because a monster appeared out of nowhere.
It’s very psychological. It’s taps into the fears alot of us probably had as children when we were afraid of the dark. The fear of isolation, the fear of the unknown.

On to the final episode. I’ll have the game beat by tomorrow night. I think the way I have played the game has been perfect and has kept me wanting to keep coming back and playing more. It’s because the game is structured episodically and I have been playing one full episode each night. So it’s just like watching a TV show.
I have thoroughly enjoyed the game. Definately one of my favorites of the year. Definately put it above the likes of Bioshock 2 and Final Fantasy XIII.Twitter.com/scatigno1

Just finished it. Thought it was fantastic the whole way through. By far my favourite game of this kind of genre of this generation.
Game was fucking creepy dudes.

Beat the first episode and I am quite liking the story so far. They werent lying when they said Lost was an influence.
Put the Lime in the Coconut was hilarious.
One thing that pissed me off sometimes you cant back track. So once you jump down a cliff you cant jump back up. Even when it looks like it is possible.
Pretty sure I missed some items that I didnt collect. Oh well.
Looks like I gotta get a lot of time spend with this game tomorrow night because it looks like Saturday I wont have time with it.
You gotta play this game in the dark like Scat says.So much of Friday I might stay inside playing it.

Just completed the Second Episode great stuff so far.
Lots of times were I was shaken up because of what happen.
Its defiantly up there with Condemned from what I experienced so far.
Hopefully this will bring more games in this genreWar.

Beat the 5th episode last night.
One of my favorite stories in a horror video game.
I keep thinking to myself What The Fuck is going on here.
I heard before that the developers used LOST as influences.
The whole black smoke and how the episodes always ended in a way that you wanted more.
Really looking forward to beating the game and DLC that shall follow afterwards.War.
