CNN just published an article about Wii shortages over the upcoming holiday season. According to the article Reggie Fils-Aime, president of Nintendo of America says that Nintendo will not be able to catch up with demand until “early next year.”
The article contains a very good quote that sums up my thoughts on Nintendo’s strategy:
“After awhile you’d have assumed that Nintendo would’ve taken every possible step to correct this problem,” fumed gaming fan DiatribeEQ on Neogaf.com, a videogame industry site. “But every month, for almost a year straight, they haven’t. This just keeps the shelves empty and fuels mass paranoia to buy it now.”
Why would Nintendo spend more money to increase production when the “shortages” are fueling the hype and driving sales by customers that feel lucky to get or have one?
