So i finally got my hands on the full retail version today, it actually got delivered yesterday but i wasn’t home. Anyway a quick first impressions.
I’ve only just reached chapter 3 so not much is going out right now but it seems a decent game. Empire Bay during the winter time looks fantastic and listening to “Let It Snow” over the radio just really immerses you into this world.
I think it’s so annoying that they have made this huge world but without any side quests etc to really do in it. It’s just screaming out to be explored and fucked around in. However i do now understand why the developers have made it this way. They want the game to stay story focused and if it was a big sandbox in the style of GTA and Just Cause 2 then chances are not everyone who plays will end up finishing it.Graphics on PS3 are decent, not great as we know, there are horrible framerate issues and screen tear is just a continual thing, but hey, i dealt with owning the inferior version of Red Dead Redemption and enjoyed the shit outta that so hopefully i will enjoy this to the end as well.
The first car i ‘claimed’ as my own handled really well, even at speed. I also like the fact there is a speedometer on the hud so you can check how fast you are going, which is good because unlike GTA, cops will pull you over for speeding in this game.
The writing is very good and i was laughing my ass off at Joe’s chat up lines lol.
So ye, i’m looking forward to getting more into it.
I’ve not tried this exclusive PS3 DLC yet, but hopefully have some impressions of that on the podcast tomorrow.
08/28/2010 at 4:03 pm #46466You must of not played the original Mafia. It was built the same way Mafia 2 is built.
I do not want Trophies, Money or not even a title saying I am number "1". You can have your cheap trophies, paper titles, and dingy headbands. I am a "STORY" to my peers, a "LEGEND" for your kids to hear, and a "FOLKLORE" to keep you from dieing with fear - Calvin D. Kates aka Chauncy "TRU" Talon.

You guys might want to play the original. That story is so phenomenal. I was surprised how good the story was. I just hate the speed limit bullshit on the game, but they are trying to stimulate a “real world.”

08/29/2010 at 11:47 am #4647408/29/2010 at 3:13 pm #46479I disagree. I prefer the Fallout 3 soundtrack. Mafia II does have a great one just not better than Fallout 3.
As for the game. I’m just not enjoying it. I’m at the part after finishing selling gas stamps. I hated that mission I was lucky I finished it in time. With just a few seconds left.
Story I probably the best part of the game.
08/31/2010 at 2:42 pm #46507Damn, the shooting mechanics in this game are sooooo bad it’s not even funny. Not only is the aim assist useless, normal aiming is just as frustrating. Combined with the fact it contains a horrible cover system, takes only 3 bullets before you die and one of the biggest aspects of this game just feels completely broken.
I’m on Chapter 9 and honestly this is fast becoming my most disappointing game of the year. Yes, even more than Bioshock 2 was.
Can’t believe I was hyped for this for so long.

Honestly, biggest disappointment of the year so far.
I really thought that despite the fucked up shooting mechanics that the story would keep me engrossed. It didn’t. They could have elaborated soooo much on some of the shit that went on and they didn’t. This made the story sub-par at best and the ending was one of the worst I have come across.
Damn, talk about wasted potential.09/03/2010 at 1:46 am #46539Beat it a few hours ago.
Really nothing about the game amazed me.
The story wasn’t all that great.
Missions weren’t all that fun.
Hated the fighting in the game.
And some much frickin drivingYou know they could of went and did something like in the Godfather game were you extort people/business for money, rob bank etc.
I did enjoy the fact it was 40/50s time era I always enjoy the atmosphere of games set back a few decades.
Soundtrack is great. So Scat did you try the DLC yet ?
09/03/2010 at 8:23 am #46542Honestly, the DLC was wank. It’s basically a series of missions you are sent on where you have to drive somewhere, take somebody out etc.
However, it plays out in a sort of arcade style where you earn points for killing people, more for headshots in quick succession to gain multipliers, that type of thing. Then at the end of each mission you get a rank based on how well you did, and then you also get placed on the online leaderboards. Sounds like fun right? It’s not because again the shooting mechanics still suck so it just ends up frustrating.09/12/2010 at 4:26 pm #46656Here is the Digital Foundry face-off for anybody who is still interested.
