All this talk about the Wii U got me thinking about the future of Nintendo and their franchise as a whole. Nintendo is in a very unique position that other game companies could only dream of. The franchises and characters that create their world of games are so iconic and loved that they literally drive their business. Nintendo honesty doesn’t have to depend on having the most powerful console out. As long as they release a new Mario Bros, Zelda, Mario Kart, and sprinkle in some of their supporting cast (Kirby, Star Fox, Metroid, etc.) to support their machines they will continue to thrive. The only other company I can think of who has achieved this level of franchise driven equity (and beyond) is Disney.
On to the future of Nintendo. I recently purchased a gaming projector (Optoma GT750) that plays HD 3D and I have to say playing through games like Gears of War 3, Wipeout HD, and Crysis 2 in 3D being projected on a wall has truly amazed me. I also am the not so proud owner of a Nintendo 3DS. The two jewels of that handheld so far has been Zelda and Star Fox. Its amazing how well those franchises translate to 3D. Now think of the possibilities with this new Wii U device. You know Nintendo is not going to abandon 3D gaming. Imagine what it will be like playing a new Mario Galaxy game in 3D or Star Fox with overhauled graphics or Mario Kart with turtle shells flying at your face. What gamer out there wouldn’t get excited about that?
I say all that to say, Nintendo will win because they have a strong foundation built upon a world that gamers love. The technology is just the vehicle to get you there. At the end of the day as gamers we all want to play Nintendo games because we know what we’re going to get. A creative fun familiar experience.

I don’t want to pay £300+ for a system just to have a Mario and a Zelda game. They need to put out top quality titles on a regular basis. They need new AAA IP’s that they market in the right way. The Wii may have sold over 80+ million units, but how many of them are probably sat on the shelf collecting dust or just used for fitness and party games?
It’s going to be interesting to see how they adapt into the HD era.

They don’t need all that. All they need is a new Pokemon game and you’re getting it!
10/05/2011 at 4:26 pm #51318….and the chances of them doing that are pretty slim. As I outlined in that article they won’t see the need for it until the sales of the handheld games begin to decline. I want them to make that game, but I don’t think we will hear anything about it for the foreseeable future
10/05/2011 at 5:48 pm #51322Yeah I think there are certain aspects of that games core mechanics that need the handheld environment to flourish for example the random battles you get into with wild pokemon. That style of RPG is acceptable on handhelds but on consoles you’ll probably want more of a Zelda style of play where you see potential opponents and choose to approach and fight them. If they implemented something like that then it would have console appeal. The biggest thing I hated about games like FF7 was that random battle shit. Drove me crazy!
10/30/2011 at 6:00 pm #51794They need to start producing new IPs. Period. The innovation of the console can’t be the only thing they offer games. That’s the mistake they made with the Wii. They need to start continuing to strengthen their iconic IPs with releases every few or so years(not too often), but they also need to start inventing new IPs because their reliance on old triumphs will end up screwing them over and stuck in the past like they were this console generation.
