The Ultimate Fighting Championship will apparently scrap a UFC 101 bout between former UFC light heavyweight champion Forrest Griffin (16-5 MMA, 7-3 UFC) and top contender Thiago Silva (13-1 MMA, 4-1 UFC) in favor of a Griffin vs. Anderson Silva (24-4 MMA, 9-0 UFC) match-up.
Sources close to the organization today told MMAjunkie.com (http://www.mmajunkie.com) a meeting was held last week to discuss the Anderson Silva vs. Griffin bout and that verbal agreements are now in place.
Anderson Silva, fresh off a heavily criticized title defense over Thales Leites at UFC 97, will now move up a weight class for the non-title fight with Griffin.
Although not officially announced by the organization, UFC 101 takes place Aug. 8, most likely at the Wachovia Center in Philadelphia. The event also features a UFC lightweight title fight between title-holder B.J. Penn and top contender Kenny Florian.
Rumors of the potential Anderson Silva vs. Griffin bout began showing up last week after some cryptic emails were sent to a variety of MMA news outlets. The flames were fanned when seemingly unsubstantiated reports of the rumored fight were posted on a few MMA message boards over the weekend.
Although the fight is now close to official (but not signed), a source close to Thiago Silva told MMAjunkie.com the fighter was unaware his fight with Griffin had been scratched. Even as of this morning, the fighter was apparently under the impression he was still scheduled to fight Griffin at UFC 101.
MMAjunkie.com first reported in March that the UFC had lined up the Thiago Silva vs. Griffin fight, which many considered a bout that would determined the light heavyweight division’s No. 1 contender after Quinton Jackson. Jackson is scheduled to fight the winner of a UFC 98 bout between current champ Evans and Lyoto Machida later this summer.
The source isn’t sure if Thiago Silva will remain on the UFC 101 card with a new opponent or if he’ll be shifted to another event.
As for Anderson Silva, UFC officials wasted no time scheduling him for his next fight. He most recently fought on April 18 as a headliner for UFC 97. He entered the fight as a significant favorite, and though he won a lopsided unanimous-decision victory, Anderson Silva was criticized for what seemed a conservative game plan in which he opted not to follow Leites, a Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt, to the ground.
UFC President Dana White called the fight “embarrassing” and “disappointing,” and he openly questioned if Anderson Silva needed another challenge at 205 pounds. The fighter, who picked up a UFC record ninth straight victory with the Leites win, moved up to 205 pounds in July 2008 for a non-title fight with James Irvin, and the Brazilian striker has made no secret of his intentions to move up a weight class again in the future.
The UFC has apparently obliged.

After having his expected bout with Forrest Griffin pulled out from underneath his feet earlier this afternoon, Brazilian bomber Thiago Silva has his sights set on a new challenge in the form of “The Dean of Mean” Keith Jardine this evening.
The two are expected to meet up at UFC 102 according to recently published report from John Morgan at MMAjunkie.com.
While nothing has been officially announced of UFC 102 by the organization at this point, it is expected to be headlined by a heavyweight showdown between former UFC heavyweight champions Randy Couture and Antonio Rodrigo “Minotauro” Nogueira and to take place on August 29 in Portland, Oregon.
Thiago Silva is fresh off of a knockout loss courtesy of upcoming light heavyweight championship challenger Lyoto Machida at UFC 94. Prior to that the American Top Team trained fighter had gone undefeated in his professional mixed martial arts career with four consecutive victories in the octagon.
A win over a contender like Jardine is likely to put Silva right back in the mix in the UFC’s 205 pound division.
Jardine always just seems a couple wins away from a title shot in the UFC. After his impressive victory over Forrest Griffin he was brutalized at the hands of Houston Alexander, he rebounded from that loss with a decision victory over Chuck Liddell only to be knocked stiff at the hands of Wanderlei Silva, and most recently Jardine out pointed Brandon Vera but came up on the losing end of a hard fought decision to Quinton “Rampage” Jackson at UFC 96.
If Jardine can look impressive against Silva at UFC 102 he would certainly be one win away from a long sought after championship bout for the third time in his career.

also, did you hear floyd mayweather has come out of retirement cos he has that will to fight again, he’ sgonna square off against juan manuel marquez (the guy who alot of people believe beat pacquiao twice), that will be an amazing match, this division of fighters is the most exciting in the world right now, and i’m sure there will be some excelent fights in the future between not only these four but others as well
In a bout that will more than likely determine the #1 contender for the UFC’s middleweight title, Demian Maia will take on Nate Marquardt at UFC 102 which is tentatively scheduled for August 29th and will be held in Portland, Oregon.
MMAJunkie.com was the first to report the bout between the two middleweight dynamos on its website earlier today.
Speculation has been running rampant about who would face Anderson Silva next with the winner of Michael Bisping and Dan Henderson also under consideration after their bout at UFC 100 in July.
Marquardt is coming off an impressive third round TKO over Wilson Gouveia at UFC 95. Maia scored his tenth win in as many fights as well as his fifth submission victory in as many UFC fights on the same card against former WEC middleweight title contender Chael Sonnen. This fight has been talked about for some time now as well as both men seemed to have valid claims to be the #1 contender to Silva’s title.
Maia may have been hurt a bit by the poor performance put on by fellow Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt Thales Leites at UFC 97 against Silva. Leites showed absolutely no desire to fight Silva and many fans and pundits alike believed that Maia although a more talented fighter than Leites was too similar and that the UFC would want to avoid a repeat performance in a Silva title fight.
Marquardt has had a shot at Silva back at UFC 73 in July of 2007 but was stopped by TKO in the first round. He has seemed to improve all aspects of his game while under the tutelage of Greg Jackson and many believe he would offer Silva a much better fight the second time around. Marquardt is 3-1 since his fight with Silva losing a controversial split decision to Leites at UFC 85 in June of 2008, Marquardt was penalized two points during that bout. One point was deducted for kneeing in the head while he was still on the ground and the second point was deducted for Marquardt hitting Leites on the back of the head. Referee Herb Dean was heavily criticized for taking that point away.
UFC 102 is to be headlined by a battle of former UFC heavyweight champions as Randy Couture will face former PRIDE superstar Antonio Rodrigo Noguiera. Also set to appear on this card are local fighters Chael Sonnen who will take on Wilson Gouveia, a returning Chris Leben will battle Jake Rosholt and Junior Dos Santos will battle Justin McCully.
After losing in the finals in last season’s light heavyweight tournament on The Ultimate Fighter, the UFC still had high hopes for Vinny Magalhaes. After all, the man is a black belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu as well as a two time Brazilian National heavyweight champion.However, after suffering a second consecutive loss in the UFC to Eliot Marshall at UFC 97 on April 18, Magalhaes will be looking for a new place to fight.
According to the latest print edition of “The Wrestling Observer”, the UFC has decided to release Magalhaes mainly because the company is trying to build new contenders in each weight class. The fighters who don’t have potential according to the UFC will be sent packing.
Magalhaes entered season 8 of The Ultimate Fighter with plenty of hype due to his impressive background in BJJ. He was widely considered one of the favorites to win the light heavyweight tournament. While on the show, he went on to defeat Lance Evans, Jules Bruchez, and Krzysztof Soszynski. In the finals he ran into the undefeated Ryan Bader who got the win with an impressive TKO victory in just a little over two minutes; ending Vinny’s dream to become the The Ultimate Fighter.
