What do you guys think about the role of the gaming press on video games? Do you think it is positive because in a way the grease the cogs of the industry and deliver news, updates, and reviews so gamers can stay abreast of the games they like and consider whether it is good or not? Do you think it is bad because some gamers depend on them for reviews and use their opinions to directly determine if they should look into a game?

        Great topic.

Honestly, I hate how big reviews for games have become. I believe that it does directly affect sales and peoples perceptions of a game. I remember back in the late 90’s to early 00’s when I never looked up reviews for games. I mean I read reviews because I used to buy a shit ton of gaming magazines before I had the internet, but I didn’t actively seek out reviews to determine whether or not I bought a particular game, and to be honest, back then the reviews didn’t really bother me because I too young to even understand about all the technical aspects, and my wanting of the game pretty much came from seeing Screenshots, Boxart and playing the demo disc that would come with the Official Playstation Magazine.

Shit gets heated nowadays. I’ve had many heated discussions with Brook and Talon about ‘Good’ and ‘Bad’ games. I do read a lot of reviews now these days and sometimes they do determine whether or not I go out and buy it, but even now, if a game looks good to me then I will pick it up, despite what negative criticism it gets. Dead Island is a prime example of that. It got raped in the reviews, but it looked like fun from what I had seen, which made me want to pick it up. Unfortunately, the technical issues just couldn’t be overlooked so I stopped playing it whilst they worked on a patch, and I will go back to it soon.

We live in the internet age now where Gamers are more aware about what they are purchasing and the Gaming Press definitely does influence that. I try to play as many games as I possibly can due to being part of GameManx and actually having the means these days to buy my own games pretty much whenever I want instead of having to wait for Christmas or my Birthday to receive them as gifts.

Unfortunately I believe we have lost the days where a person walks into a game store and buys something that looks appealing to them. Like I said, gamers are too aware these days, and a game can either live or die based on it’s metacritic score. The consequence of that is a lot of gaming gems will be lost.

Solid points. I think it is good that gamers are aware actually. It’s good to know what most are saying about a game and have an idea of where your $60 is going towards.

On the same token, the obsessive need of gamers to hear someone else support a game they are into is bad.

Even if a game is critically panned, if you like that style of gameplay, go for it. You are the one who is supposed to enjoy it. Your $50-$60 investment should go towards something you like. I love the Dynasty Warriors games & anime based games(DBZ & Naruto). The reviews were unbelievably negative towards both, I purchased several of them & would love playing them…and then trade them in when a new one was releasing. lol

So, what makes the gaming press bad if anything isn’t so much them in themselves, it is more so gamers wanting to be co-signed before investing in a game.

Gaming press reviews should only be taken into consideration, not be the end all be all of purchasing a game.

Yeah I agree as well. I would like to add also that not every reviewer should review certain games. Many games get dinged for things they should not. Like going into a dynasty warriors game you know to expect a fair amount of repetition so I hate it when reviewers ding them for that.

On the flip side I feel that back in the days before the “reviews web” I used to buy a ton more bad games and I used to trade in games much more frequently. I think as long as reviews are read as a way to learn about the games and reviewers describe the mechanical flaws and sucesses its all good. But knocking games because of things it wasnt setting out to do is just foolish and I see that in some uncharted 3 reviews specifically about “dated mechanics” which is bogus because thats subjective. When is a mechanic “dated”? Does tetris have dated mechanics? Some of these reviewers make up the dumbest shit to ding games for and the developers suffer. We also suffer because we dont get sequels sometimes and the games dont get known. Vanquish didnt get praised enough for innovating on its progressive and offensive approach to the third person genre and cover mechanics and at the same time uncharted 3 with its fine tuned and polished traversal, cover and shooting mechanics gets dinged for not innovating? Bogus.

I look at the games press like hiphop press. Tons of people review lil wayne albums really well but that doesnt mean the albums are any good. Just because you put syrup on something doesnt make it pancakes.
