Like pretty much everyone else, Electronic Arts is in full cost-cutting mode. And now it’s starting to look like nothing is safe.

Gamasutra is reporting that EA Tiburon, which is responsible for the Madden franchise among other EA Sports titles, is the latest studio to be receiving cuts. These come along with the reported cuts to Blackbox and Mythic, as well as reportedly cutting ties with Pandemic Brisbane.

EA has already announced a ‘global reduction’ that will see 10 percent of its workforce laid off, but the publisher won’t comment on plans for specific facilities and stuff until its earnings call in early February. Until then, we’ll keep you up to date on additional information as we learn it.

The numbers just keep rolling. It have to be rough working for EA right now.

I do not want Trophies, Money or not even a title saying I am number "1". You can have your cheap trophies, paper titles, and dingy headbands. I am a "STORY" to my peers, a "LEGEND" for your kids to hear, and a "FOLKLORE" to keep you from dieing with fear - Calvin D. Kates aka Chauncy "TRU" Talon.

EA had tons of good games in 2008…why do they need to cut costs?

Everyone is doing it. The recession is starting to affect the games industry, but I still see there being growth this year, but it might not be a huge growth.

I bet a lot of the people being laid off are QA and game testers. Plus any projects that were in the planning stage. I think EA is still going to have a few good games this year. Hopefully, they figure out what to do with Madden, to make it easier to get into.

Yeah it’s easy if you already watch football, but there is a reason why sales of Madden continue to drop each year. And I bet it’s because it isn’t a pick-up-and-play game anymore.

And the fact that the games are basically the same every year or even worse some years (judging by reviews, as I haven’t played the new one, I only played 2008, missed 2007 and played 2006… but I just don’t feel they are worth 60 bucks, when I could get 2008 again (rebuy it..) for 9 bucks or cheaper with edge and coupons..

Yup, that’s why I hope the rumblings of a subscription for Madden comes through. I think people would be more likely to pay a small fee to update the rosters each season or maybe a larger fee to add new features. Of course, they can still put out the $60 retail release, but it may help them in the long run to give people a reason to hold onto those copies of Madden.
