How much do you guys think hype factors into purchasing a game & enjoying it? I’ve had games that I wanted badly then once it passes release the hype fades & I’m kind of cool on purchasing it. Do you think that built up hype and wonder about how the game will play & the anticipation of it make or break a video game?

Hype is definitely a double edged sword. So many big budget titles have the hype train rolling from the moment they are announced right up until it’s release date a year or two after.

I get caught up into the hype a lot. It’s hard not to. Technology is an amazing thing, and what developers can do now with trailers to make the game look amazing and then when you actually play it, you’re like meh, this ain’t all that, is becoming a much more common thing.

L.A Noire was a prime example. That game was hyped for it’s technology and I believed it was going to be the next coming of Jesus or some shit for what it was going to do for Storytelling, because the trailers and the hype train made it look that good. Then I played it, and yes the facial technology they were using was great and I hope it’s used by more developers, but the gameplay was boring and the story uninteresting for me.

GTA IV. SUPER HYPED!!! because it was a GTA game and it was the first GTA game that would appear on a ‘Next-Gen’ console. Everyone was caught up in the hype for that game, and you played it and you was like, this shit is that crack, amazing game, but then you take a step back and actually analyse that shit and then you realise, hmmmmm new engine, wack ass controls, horrible handling of vehicles, missions that you have to start right from the beginning if you die right at the end. Shit was acceptable last gen, but now, the design feels achaic.

Activision have took hype to the next level for their Call of Duty franchise, and it’s hard not to be sucked into it, because yes the trailers look great. The game has so much exposure and marketing that it is impossible not to see it, and you just know that when the game is released 95% of your Friends List is going to be playing that shit, and whether you like it or not, you are going to feel left out and want to get in on the fun. Then you do, and the shit is wack and you just wasted all that money and gave the company the means to bring out the same shit again next year.

We are all victims of hype, me included which I admit, and anyone who tries to deny that shit is a straight up liar.

Don’t get me wrong though, some games can live up to the hype that surrounds them. The likes of Uncharted 2, Red Dead Redemption, Batman: Arkham Asylum, all thoroughly deserve the praise lavished upon them, because they are games made by developers who actually did go out of their way to make a great product, not just hype it up with incredible eye catching trailers, to rack up the pre-orders and eventual sales, and then deliver a half assed effort.

Valid, I just wonder if a game is still as appealing after the hype has died down. I can say for me personal, once a game passes its release date…my hype and anticipation kind of dissipates. I will say that has literally turn me from raving mad for a chance to play gears of War 3 & arkham city to mellowing out.

I will probably be just as hungry to play them once I get a hold of a copy.
