10 Comics That Should Be Turned Into Games

30 Days of Night

We are actually surprised that this comic hasn’t been options for a game version already, especially since a movie version was released back in 2007. This terrifically scary mini-series was released by IDW Publishing in 2002 from writer Steve Niles and artist Ben Templesmith (who recently handled the art for the comic book prequel to EA’s Dead Space game). The idea of vampires feeding in a remote Alaska town for a certain period of the year where the sun doesn’t rise would be perfect for a game. Imagine a game set completely in the dark while the vampires try to eat you. Some enterprising developer could make an interesting game with this premise.

Impaler

For another vampire-style story, let’s head on over to Top Cow where they recently launched Impaler, a series written by William Harms and drawn by Matt Timson. Instead of a remote dark town a vampire invasion has occured in present day New York City. This time, however, Vlad Dracula is the good guy trying to fight the vampires. Writer Harms has a ton of game experience; he was a journalist for PC Gamer before moving to the other side of the industry, working at Gas Powered Games and now Sucker Punch. If anyone could turn this comic into a game, it’s him.

The End League

We’ve seen super hero comics before but Dark Horse Comics’ The End League is very different. Written by Rick Remender and drawn first by Matt Broome and later Eric Canete, the comic depicts an alternate Earth that has been affected by a massive disaster that has killed half the world’s population. It also gave a number of humans super-powers and some of them turned on humanity. The comic deals with the last of the super heroes as they try to battle to save the world. This new take on the super hero mythos would make for a great open world action game that would be darker in tone than most super hero game titles.

Marvel Zombies

Marvel Comics has had tons of its characters made into games but this series of mini-series and specials could be a totally new way to look at the Marvel universe. First created by writer Mark Millar (Wanted) for a storyline in Ultimate Fantastic Four this tale of an alternate Marvel universe where the super heroes have been turned into flesh eating zombies has a ton of dark humor. A game based on the Marvel Zombies universe could tap into both super hero fans and fans of games like Resident Evil and Left 4 Dead.

War Heroes

Another Mark Millar creation (with artist Tony Harris) this 2008 Image Comics mini-series combines super-heroes with military action as the wars in the Middle East cause the US Government to experiment with giving their solider super-powers in order to tip the balance. A military war game where the players have both weapons and super-human abilities sounds like a natural to us.

Sgt. Rock

There’s been a ton of WWII shooters released in the past decade but it’s hard to believe no one figured out that one of the most well known comic book characters could be adapted to fit that sub-genre. DC Comics’ classic WWII cigar-smoking hero would be a perfect fit as the star of a WWII shooter as would the colorful characters of Sgt. Rock’s Easy Company.

Jonah Hex

We’ve been waiting for a really good Western game since, well, LucasArts’s Outlaws many years ago. Yet another classic DC Comics character might fit the bill for such a title. Jonah Hex, a bounty hunter with an…interesting…face would certainly be a perfect character to base a game on. While incarnations of Hex have been seen in the far future and dealing with horror and fantasy themese, we think a Hex game should stick to a straight-up historic Western game.

Storming Paradise

If you want a WWII shooter that is truly different than the norm, then this Wildstorm comic series could be the germ of a great game idea. The recent mini-series is written by Chuck Dixon and drawn by Butch Guice and depicts and alternate timeline where the US, instead of dropping nuclear bombs on Japan, staged a full scale invasion of the island much like the Allies did for Europe. Mixing real history with speculation would be an excellent premise for either a WWII shooter or RTS game.

Drafted

When is an alien invasion not an alien invasion? This 12 issue mini-series from Devil’s Due Publishing attempts to answer that question. Drafted is written by Mark Powers and drawn by Chris Lie and depicts Earth being “invaded” by aliens who in fact are trying to recruit Earth people to fight their war for them. A sci-fi shooter with that premise would be an interesting one indeed.

Powers

It’s one of the most acclaimed creator-owned comic books in recent memory and we think a game based on Powers is a sure thing. Created by writer Brian Michael Bendis and artist Michael Avon Oeming, the series mixes hard boiled crime fiction with super heroe action. That mix of genres could also make for a very cool action game.
