Hey guys,
what do you think about the decrease in original ips, new games with new titles, and the rise of repetitive sequels from a single franchise? While it is economical to keep cranking out sequels, can we really say that it helps gaming as whole when it is not encouraged to venture out with your ideas( ala Angry Birds).
04/10/2011 at 8:25 pm #49499I don’t mind sequels as long as they are done right, unlike games like Mafia II and Bioshock 2, but I would like to see a lot more new IP’s being released, but the problems is who is actually interested in them to keep supporting them. Alan Wake, Heavy Rain and Enslaved were all brand new IP’s last year and were all worthy of sequels but probably won’t get them because I don’t think the consumer interest is there, and the developers see what games are selling at the moment and that diminishes their creativity because they want to make games that sell well too, so then you see an influx of generic mediocre games.

Ok, let me rephrase that. I think that because most people are so adverse to trying new things the industry suffers because of the lack of new ip’s that bring new ideas to the table. Companies have to make what will sell and in the end we get slight iterations via sequels and the industry moves forward slower overall.
Look at games like Vanquish. New ip that is a huge twist on cover based shooters. EXCELLENT GAME. It turns the whole concept on its head yet most people even on this site have not bought it even though its only $39 in stores now.
So yeah people are so adverse to trying say battlefield bad company but will buy every call of duty game. Even smart people I know will just play call of duty and wont take a chance on Killzone, or battlefield etc. Its a problem with society that’s just manifested in the products that are created to serve the consumers.
The music industry is even worse. The music publishers back and release music that is mostly cookie cutter iterations on the same shit. They know that people like a certain thing and they back what is similar to that which they know may sell. They dont want to take a chance because most people dont. Lets face it most people are sheep.
The bottom line is that we have less new IP’s because most people are cowards with their wallet  joking… but games are expensive and $65 its a lot of dough to loose on a wack ass game so people go with the call of duty’s and anything with name recognition. Thats my take anyway.
But in order for new ip’s to compete they need a shit ton of marketing. And good ass marking and good boxart and shit like that. vanquish’s boxart is crap. bayonettas could have been waaaay better. I think marketing sucks for many new ip’s as well. How they are marketed is a problem. Look at the darksiders boxart. lol
