With modern games like Halo and the Resident Evils, the video game world has become obsessed with the first person 3D format where you’re “virtually” mimicking your own real life movements. In a modern game like GTA, you’re given a 3D format where you’re able to move in all directions towards another point. What are all these games missing? In this article, we’ll discuss the fact that what’s missing from these games is mainly due to the 3D format of modern video games. With this in mind, we’ll see how the video game world needs to go back to 2D gaming to capture its lost greatness from the 8 and 16-bit era’s. The problems started happening at the 32-bit era. It’s time to move forward by taking a couple steps back.

      10. Simpler
      contrashot1.gif
Remember how simple Mario 1 was? Remember how simple Contra was? Were these games easy because they were simple? Absolutely not. They were difficult, detailed, and challenging. These games proved that you could make a game simple yet at the same time complicated. Super Metroid serves as another great example of this reason. Castlevania “Symphony of the Night” is yet another game that will always be remembered in it’s grace and beauty but held it’s simplicity with it’s 2D scope. It’s with combining the simplicity of the 2D space movement and the complexity possible within this space, that great games were made.

      9. More Entertaining

How bored did you get playing Mario 64? You were walking…and walking some more in the same direction, with nothing in the way of where you were going. In the 2D video game space, there is always something to see, evade, or destroy. Why would I want to meander about a 3D world? I do that everyday in real life. In the 2D world, there is always something in front of you keeping you on your toes. This keeps you in the game knowing that something can come from behind or in front of you. This makes the game much more entertaining and has much more of a possibility of always being on.

      8. More linear

With the 2D format for gaming, the video game was obviously more linear. Why is this a good thing? It gives the gamer a sense of purpose knowing that they have to go from point A to point B rather than having the massively relative options of going from point A to any point in a massive geographical 3D environment. The linearity of a game gives the gamer a specific place to go, and a specific thing to do. This linearity creates a sense of escapism for the gamer who already has too many things to do in the 3D environment given to them in “real life”.

      7. More room for creativity
      smb3_w8-1_a.png
With not having massive world where you can move anywhere you want, the game developer is given more room for creativity rather than just filling space. In a 2D environment they can worry more about the enemies that a protagonist encounters, or a perfectly timed jump that needs to be executed. The game developer can worry more about how to challenge the gamer, rather than how to make them more seem like themselves. Remember, we are in the video game world, not “3D reality” where we have to be in every day. Videos Games original greatness came from its sense of escapism rather than its pretension for some purported reality.

      6. Better Games

Why were games like Mario, Mega Man, and even Sonic (Yes Old-Wizard admits Sonic was OK!) great games? There were many reasons why these games were great, but one thing is common to them all. They were all 2D games. Even when Mega Man saw it’s ascent to the 16-bit format, it didn’t change it’s 2D style. If I remember correctly, the Mega Man X’s were great games also. The same holds true for Mario’s ascent to the 16 bit age. The games that will be remembered past this time will be the 2D games. The new 3D games are going to be seen as being too tied to the times, and specifically the times lack of substance.

      5. Loss of focus on graphics

If the video games went back to 2D, there wouldn’t have to be so much of a focus on creating the “new graphical chip that will expand graphics to even more real life themes!” Game developers will be less worried about eye candy and more focused on story line, innovative levels, and how to specifically challenge the gamer. Starting with games like Virtual Fighter, gaming has sacrificed quality for graphical innovation. Once this unconscious drive for technological innovation is curtailed, video games can one again find their roots in which they first stemmed.

      4. Smoother controlling

Ever play Resident Evil? Ever play GTA? Don’t these games sometimes just piss you off in the controlling? It takes two fucking hours to turn around in Resident Evil. This isn’t real, its just fucking annoying. The blocky, slow movement of many of these 3D games takes away any sense of gaming moving forward by not replicating the real phenomena of the human body like it wants itself too. You’re getting eaten alive by zombies and it takes you literally 5 seconds to turn around and knock these bastards down. This isn’t fun.

      3. No more GTA’s

Although the first two Grant Theft autos were 2D games, the series found its first real success in the world of 3D. In a 2D world, there would be no more Grand Theft Autos, thank God. No more news stories of this hyper-urban game that found its success on bloodlust violence and man’s lack of good taste for immediate pleasure. No more having to see front covers who people who wear “bling” and are holding guns in front of them. This pathetic excuse for creativity in a video game would be abolished if the 2D world was able to reign supreme. The gamer would be back on an epic journey rather than living a pseudo-reality of gangster life that has nowhere to go except to modern violence.

      2. You don’t want to play in the same dimensions you live in

You live in a “3D” world. You walk in it, you eat in it, you sleep in it, and worst of all you work in it. Why would you want to carry over these habitual characteristics to the video game world? I don’t want to think about another 3D universe when I go home to play games. I want to be taken into a simple 2D world with great story lines that have nothing to do with my own “real” life. Mimicking what we perceive as “reality” is not progress for the video game medium; it’s a lack of understanding of other dimensions, and more precisely, just another way of unconsciously privileging ourselves (ego) in all facets of the universe.

      1. Easier on the eyes
      mega_man_x_3_snes_screenshot4.jpg
There was much less strain on the eyes when playing 2D games. When you jumped, the whole screen didn’t jump with you. When you walked, you had a whole view of the screen while you were walking as the protagonist of the game. Turning around as your 3D character in these 3D games sometimes puts them so up-close immediately that you quickly move backwards from being to overwhelmed with a full screen of some face. There’s just too much screen movement in these 3D games. With the 2D format, you could see yourself within a static surrounding. This was much easier and more pleasurable experience for the eyes, especially when you sometimes wanted to concentrate on an aesthetically pleasing background.

Ok these guys do have a point of some of this shit, but also we would never evolved into having better games.

I completely disagree with that list and this whole thought in general. Lol at anyone saying 2d is better than 3d. Graphics matter because it is, after all, VIDEO games we’re playing. KEYWORD: VIDEO. An image is in front of you, I’d rather play Bioshock than some old ass pixelated bullshit. No offense because I don’t mean to insult the classics, that’s where it all started from, but every thing EVOLVES, it gets BETTER; not worse.

End of discussion, that list is bullshit.

Well, graphics don’t necessarily matter. I mean, look at wii sales.

Wii has originality and appeal values.

And the graphics aren’t the worst ever. They’re an improvement from 2d graphics of Pong (is that even 2d?) pacman (1d?), etc.

I’m just saying graphics have improved.

But besides that my main point is that I’d rather play a story based game over running around eating dots with pacman or moving in circles with a worm.

but yeah what u say is true, and like with them top 10 reasons, i have never heard of somebody saying that “ahh i stopped playing Call Of Duty 4 for a bit becuase it was hurting my eyes!”

I was just playing games in the arcade, and no doubt, PacMan, Snake, Space Invaders were great games at the time, but honestly, I could only sit there and play that shit for 10 minutes. Whereas I can sit and play some games (Bioshock for example) all day and night.

                    Legend

                      10. Simpler…ok but why is this such a good reason, there is only so many simple games one can play before needing a challenge, and plus i don’t even think all 2D games are more simple than 3D games to be honest, there’s plenty of hard 2D games, this reason is not really a reason at all to be honest.

                      9. More Entertaining…ok, Are you fudging serious, and using Mario as an example is a travesty, Mario 64 was an amazing game. 2D games are really not more entertaining than 3D games, some 2D games can be pretty entertaining maybe AS entertaining (Bionic Commando:Re-armed, Zelda, Super Mario Brothers etc) but 3D games are so much more entertaining man, there’s only so much side scrolling one can take, with the background just changing its appearance every now and then.

                      8. More Linear… this is true, but like linearity can be a bette thing but like not always, sometimes when you are stuck, and u find out what u have to do, you feel a bigger sense of achievement discovering the way to go by yourself, i think the fact that they are not only more linear, but in a sense they are TOO linear, in that there is only one way to go alot of the time.

                      7. More Room For Creativity…quite possibly one of the worst reasons on this list, you’re kidding right? is this a joke? more creativity in a 2D game, i mean look at the examples used, “the enemies the protagonist encounters”, “perfectly timed jump that needs to be executed” wtf! thats what they could think of for creativity, enemies u either shoot with some sort of fireball, or jump on their backs lol, give me a break man! 3D games are much more creativity, i can give 2 examples of how. Gears of War, when you have to lead that big charging monster thing outside, u stand against a wall and let his own momentum take him, that was sick! In Army of Two, the Aggro feature, enough said.

                      6. Better Games…i might take the last statement back, this might be the worst reason on the list, sure them games may have been great, but like they were 2D becuase at the time they didn’t have a choice, bu as soon as 3D was available they all converted, but they were said to be not as good, becuase they were the sort of games made for 2D to be honest, could you imagine playing Halo in 2D, man that’d suck! but we don’t see halo going 2D because, because it doesn’t have to, if halo was made in them years it would be 2D. 2D games are not better than 3D games, they may be better with the examples used, but that’s because everyone knows mario and (dare i say) sonic as great 2D games, so when they turn 3D they kind of lose some value they have.

                      5. Loss Of Focus On Graphics…oh my god, terrible reason again, some games fall victim to too much concentration on graphics, but man not al of them, especially not the best games, a game with great gameplay and a great story, will be great, add some amazing gtraphics to that, and the game is amazing! whereas a game with great graphics, a bad storyline and dodgy gameplay will suck i don’t deny that, but like for this reason to be effective, there would have to be alot of games that come to mind that fall victim to it, and there just isn’t, oh and virtual fighter as an example, GTFO!

                      4. Smoother Controlling… hmmm this may be true, but thats only because going right and jumping is not difficult is it lol, and whoever takes 2 hours to turn around on Resident Evil should not be giving opinions on games in the first place, but to be honest, the controlling does not bug me on any games, only some games have dodgy controlling, like kane and lynch that was pretty bad, but that was a bad game overall, but i mean with Resident Evil and GTA, i have no problem controlling the characters once i’m used to the controls. scolling right and jumping on enemies is always going to be smoother most of the time, but that doesn’t mean it’s better lol bloody hell.

                      3. No More GTA’s… Grand Theft Auto III verdict – AMAZING, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City verdict – AMAZING, Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas verdict – AMAZING, GTA IV was a bit of a let down, but like it got a 10 lol, i wouldn’t have given it that, it was a 10 for half an hour lol, then the net hour it’d be down to a 9, then when u play it for a day it’s an 8.5, then play for a week, it’s about a 7/10, but come on this is rediculous isn’t it? everyone knows that GTA games are successful and highly innovative, let’s research, fuck me reanting cos i’d rant for longer on GTA, let me whip some research…*researches*…………*finds evidence* ok here’s an interesting fact, Mario has spawned over 200 games, 2D and 3D, and has sold 200 million, now GTA has spawned 8 stand alone games, and has sold 70 million…wow men lie women lie NUMBERS DON’T.

                      2. You Don’t Want To Play In The Same Dimensions You Live In… so you’re saying i’m a masterchief that shoot aliens and tries to save the world GTFO, this is a bit silly, because i don’t think there are many games that show me the world that i live in, and the ones that come remotely closely , possibly COD4 (even though i’m not a soldier in a war, it’s more real to life), it doesn’t matter because alot of them games are fantastic. here’s some more research, The Sims is quite possibly the game that is the closest to representing real life, yet The Sims franchise is 3rd overall of highest selling franchises, only beaten out by mario and pokemon. wow!

                      1. Easier On The Eyes…like i said before, i’ve never heard somebody saying they stopped playing a game becuase the game was hurting their eyes, they may stop because staring at the tv too long is straining, which is true, that happens to me, but the is irrelevant of what the game is, my eyes strained like hell playing breakout in the arcade on this site, the games may be easier on the eyes, but that seems t be because there isn’t as much going on lol, which can be less fun. i don’t think your eyes are affected by the actual game on screen i think your eyes are affected by the actual TV.

So to me nearly all of these reasons are stupid, my main issue with the reasons is that, it seems to be comparing all the best 2D games with alot of bad 3D games, not many examples were given for any of the reasons used as well.

                      just my 2 pence lol
