The $600, 80 GB model of PlayStation 3 is now available in stores, Sony announced this morning. They also said that supplies of the 60 GB model, currently priced at $500, are expected to be depleted for good by the end of autumn.
Game|Life’s official position is that anyone who wants a PlayStation 3 should buy the $500 model before it is taken off shelves. An extra 20 gigabytes of hard drive space and a copy of Motorstorm isn’t worth $100, especially when you consider that the backward compatibility hardware has been removed.
Sony hasn’t been forthcoming about how much the console’s ability to play legacy games has been cut back for this model, so it’s likely that we’ll just have to wait for reports to trickle in from consumers.
In a statement today, Sony said that sales of the 60 GB model have increased 113% “at the company’s top five retailers” “when compared to the average sales of four weeks prior to the price drop.” I’m not sure whether all those linguistic gymnastics are there to obfuscate the real numbers, or just because this is the only data they have available.
